Singer's Theatre Workshop Presents 'True Story Of Cinderella'

The Denison Singer's Theatre Workshop presentsThe True Story of Cinderella,a show that tells the story of Cinderella through the use of arias, duets, ragtime, torch songs, ballads, and narration, at 3 p.m., Sunday (May 1) in Burke Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

True Storywas written by Warren Martin, a member of the faculty at Westminster Choir College. The work was composed at the request of his students for a May Day celebration in 1955. The premiere was performed by 13 graduate students with the composer at the piano. Throughout the years, this work has enjoyed numerous performances, primarily by students and/or alums of Choir College.

The Denison production is directed by Belinda Andrews-Smith, the coordinator of vocal studies for the music department. Andrews-Smith earned her bachelor's degree in vocal performance from Bowling Green State University and went onto earn her master's and doctoral degrees at Ohio State University. A featured soloist for numerous concerts, oratorios, and cantatas, Andrews-Smith has been featured with the Vivaldi Traveling Circus, the Trinity Chamber series, the Denison University Concert Choir, the Kenyon Chamber Singers, and the Welsh Hills Symphony. In addition to concert performances, Andrews-Smith maintains an active opera career and has performed with Opera Columbus and the former Columbus Light Opera. Before teaching private voice and opera literature at Denison, Andrews-Smith taught at Anderson University, Ohio University, and Bowling Green State University.

Cast members include seniors Jennifer Hart (Calvert City, Ky.) and Elaine Martin (Thiensville, Wis.); juniors Marten Carlson (Franklin, Ind.), Michael Goldsberry (St. Louisville), Caitlin McCown (Beloit, Wis.), Emily Meagher (Evansville, Ind.), and Mary Sheridan (Troy); sophomores Natalie Berndsen (Columbus), Chris Carr (Weymouth, Mass.), Kristin Cox (Traverse City, Mich.), Erin Donovan (Oberlin), Renee Goff (Orrville), Jesse Koza (Lancaster), and Julie Rogers (Upper Montclair, N.J.); and first-years Matt Coon (Bryan), Katie Knisely (Loveland), and Lauren Schwartz (Hilliard).
