Theatrical Group Explores Latino Issues In Presentation at Denison University

Posted: October 4, 2006

Teatro Luna, a theatrical ensemble that was organized to explore the experiences and cultures of Latina and Hispana women, will present "S-E-X-Oh!" at Denison at 8 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 11) on the third floor of Slayter Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

In "S-E-X-Oh!," the ensemble tackles the complicated and often hilarious relationship between gender, culture and the very thing our "Abuelas" made us promise we'd never do (at least not before we were married).

Founded by Coya Paz and Tanya Saracho in June of 2000, Teatro Luna is Chicago's first and only all-Latina theater. The group has created four original ensemble works based on autobiographical experiences and true-life stories. The first show, "Generic Latina," explored the diversity of Latina lives. "Dejame Contarte (Let Me Tell You)" explored the 2000 Census and the particularities of being both Latina/Hispana and women, focusing on the kinds of life experiences that cannot be tabulated by checking a box. "The Maria Chronicles" focused on the media and casting industry from a Latina point of view and the latest production, "S-E-X-Oh," moves the discussion about Latina sexuality beyond the Virgin/Whore dichotomy portrayed not just in the popular media, but also in many Latina homes as well.

In addition to developing its own ensemble works, Teatro Luna has sponsored a workshop to nurture original solo works by Chicago Latina artists, writing and performance workshops, and presents a quarterly New Works Reading Series.

Teatro Luna's appearance at Denison is sponsored by the Laura C. Harris "Gendered Borders" program, the Women's Studies Program and the Department of Modern Languages.
