The Dining Roomby A. R. Gurney opens the season. In this richly humorous, moving, and theatrical play, a generic dining room becomes the stage for six actors to portray an array of diverse characters. Gurney causes this now-neglected room to regain its role as a vital center of family life in which a wide spectrum of 20th century American culture is revealed. Performance dates are September 28-29 and October 2-6.
Right You Are If You Think You Areis by Nobel prize-winning Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello. It is a brilliant, expressionistic parable set in a small town -- a town with a secret its gossipy citizens are desperate to unravel. This fascinating fable explores truth, vanity, the necessity of illusion, and the instability of human personality. Dates of performance are November 9-10 and 13-17.
The medieval morality playEverymanwill be presented in a new adaptation by Ralph Allen, who will also direct the production. The author of the Broadway hit musicalSugar Babies, Allen was visiting professor of theatre history at Denison in 1998, when he also directed his adaptation of a comedy by Lope de Vega,The Gardener?s Dog. His new version ofEverymanpromises to sparkle with the Allen wit and to reaffirm that this classic morality tale speaks profoundly to a contemporary audience. Performance dates are February 22-23, 26-28, and March 1-2.
The season will close with the world premiere of a play by Caridad Svich, who will be the Jonathan R. Reynolds Playwright-in-Residence during the spring semester. Svich is writing this play especially for Denison University Theatre. Her work has been produced at regional theatres around the country; and she has been hailed, by audiences and critics alike, as one of the most innovative and imaginative new voices in American theatre. Production dates will be April 12-13 and 16-20.
