GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison University’s Department of Theatre will offer four major productions for the 2012-13 academic year. All performances take place in Denison University’s Ace Morgan Theatre (211 West College Street). Ticket prices are general admission $8, senior citizens $5, and students $4. Subscriptions are available by calling the Department of Theatre at 740-587-6231, visit www.denison.edu for more information.

The theatre opens its 82nd subscription season with Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1947. Set in steamy New Orleans, the play deals with the culture clash between Blanche DuBois and her working-class brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski. Directed by theatre professor Mark Seamon, the performances are at 8 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 4-6; at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7; and at 8 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 9-11.

The season’s second production, “Theatres of War,” is written and directed by theatre professor Peter Pauzé. This thought-provoking comedy is a topsy-turvy trip through the history of American warfare. The hero is a WWII member of the U.S. Army who wonders how and why he ended up lying in the ruins of a French boutique, fatally wounded. He is offered cheerful advice and passionate opinions on the subject of human aggression from sources as varied as his dead parents and numerous historical characters. Performances are at 8 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 8-10; and Tuesday through Thursday, Nov. 12-15.

“The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God” by Djanet Sears continues the season, directed by theatre professor Cheryl McFarren. The play is set in present-day Negro Creek, a 200-year-old black community in Western Ontario where Rainey Baldwin-Johnson struggles to heal from the loss of her daughter and deal with the disintegration of her marriage and her elderly father’s eccentricity. Performances are at 8 p.m. from Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, and Tuesday, Feb. 26, through Saturday, March 2.

Closing the season will be Molière’s wicked satire “Tartuffe” in a poetic translation by Ranjit Bolt, directed by Geoffrey Nelson. Banned after its first performance in 1664, this play has been provoking worldwide laughter ever since. Tartuffe is a religious fraud who has hoodwinked wealthy merchant Orgon and is poised to marry his host’s daughter, seduce his wife and steal his fortune. Witty dialogue in rhymed couplets sparks this period comedy with its very contemporary message. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 12-13, and Tuesday through Saturday, April 16-20.
