A year that includes well-known works and a world premiere is on tap for the theatre season at Denison University. All performances will begin at 8 p.m. at the Ace Morgan Theatre (211 W. College Street). For ticket information, contact 740-587-6527 or visit the Denison web site.
The season kicks off with “Inherit the Wind,” based on a real-life case in 1925 in which two lawyers argue the case for and against a science teacher accused of the crime of teaching evolution. Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee, “Inherit the Wind” will be performed on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, and Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 6-10.
The world premiere of “Departures,” a play by Peter Pauzé, a Denison associate professor of theatre, will be staged Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 12-14, and Monday through Thursday, Nov. 16-19. “Departures,” set in an airport on New Year’s Eve, is a fast-paced jigsaw puzzle of a play that cheerfully explores life, death, God, personal identity, and the health benefits of chai tea latte.
The spring season will open with “Shipwrecked! An Entertainment—The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (as told by himself).” Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning Donald Margulies, “Shipwrecked” is inspired by the true story of an unlikely hero who spellbound Victorian England with his incredible tale. “Shipwrecked” will be performed Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20, and Tuesday through Saturday, Feb. 23-27.
Translated by Dakin Matthews, “Spite for Spite” is a revival of the 1654 Spanish comedy “El desden con el desden” by Agustin Moreto. The plot involves the heiress Diana who has vowed to disdain all men. Count Carlos has fallen madly in love with her, only to be ignored. His man Polilla engineers a series of plots to gain the lady’s love—all of which depend upon Carlos treating her with equal disdain. Madcap mishaps abound on the way to a happy ending. The production will be mounted Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17, and Tuesday through Saturday, April 20-24.
Using the same setting, a musical adaptation of “El desden con el desden” will be presented in Spanish in Ace Morgan Theatre at 8 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, April 18-19. Adapted and directed by Francisco Garcia Vincente, professor of directing at the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramatico (ESAD) of Murcia, Spain, it will be performed by two actors from ESAD and Denison students from the Department of Modern Languages.
