GRANVILLE—On Denison University’s campus have you ever heard the sweet song of an oriole in the spring? The unmistakable sound of a woodpecker in the winter? Or the chirp of the chickadee in the fall? If you take time to listen and watch, you will find that Denison is home to an abundance of birds no matter what the season. On Friday, March 21, at 4 p.m. in Herrick Hall (500 West Loop) the McGregor Hum/an/imal Series will present pianist Tom Rosenkranz performing as the opening act in a three-part series honoring the birds and birdwatchers on Denison’s campus. The performance is free and open to the public.
As the musical prelude to this three-part Bird Miniseries, Rosenkranz will perform bird-inspired compositions by legendary French composer Olivier Messiaen. Rosenkranz is the first of three guests in the series which also includes naturalists Kenn Kaufman and his presentation on Ohio birds on March 28, and bird enthusiast Tom Schultz, who will be leading a bird-walk in Denison’s Bioreserve on April 12.
Rosenkranz is the recipient of a Presser Foundation grant to study Messiaen’s music in Paris, France. He is the piano area chair and assistant professor of piano at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
