Posted: May 22, 2000

Denison junior Ilana Schonfeld-Hicks has been awarded a Morris K. Udall Scholarship on the basis of her academic merit and commitment to a field related to the environment. Schonfeld-Hicks plans to study sustainable urban development in Norway this fall, according to her faculty adviser, Katrina Korfmacher.

The Morris K. Udall Foundation awarded 80 scholarships for the 2000-2001 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from 34 states. The Udall Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit and were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. (Korfmacher, assistant professor of environmental studies, nominated Schonfeld-Hicks.) Seventy-three Scholars are in fields related to the environment, four in health care and three in tribal public policy. The one-year scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $5,000 per year.

Established by Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Morris K. Udall and his legacy of public service, the Morris K. Udall Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records.

Schonfeld-Hicks, daughter of Douglas Hicks and Susan Schonfeld of East 24th Street, Minneapolis, is a 1998 graduate of South High School and an environmental studies major at Denison. A consistent dean?s list student, Schonfeld-Hicks holds a University Scholarship.
