GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison University’s esteemed Vail Series will welcome the highly acclaimed BBC Concert Orchestra with conductor Keith Lockhart to Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive) at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1. A limited number of tickets may be offered for sale to the general public at $15 if space allows. Details will be available at vailseries.org and on the Vail Series hotline at 740-587-6557.

Renowned for their versatility, the BBC Orchestra holds with their repertoire composers from Mozart to Sondheim, and Elgar to the Pet Shop Boys. The orchestra utilizes this astounding flexibility constantly, performing a weekly concert on the world’s longest-running music show since 1952, as well as an extremely ambitious concert schedule. Last year alone, the orchestra performed well over 100 concerts in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Keith Lockhart was appointed the seventh principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in August of 2010, even as he continues his tenure as conductor to the Boston Pops. After he began to wield the baton with the BBC Orchestra, he led a critically acclaimed 15-city U. S. tour in the 2010 season, conducting annual performances at The Proms, and celebrating the orchestra’s 60th year in 2012. In June of that same year, Lockhart conducted the orchestra during Queen Elizabeth II’s gala Diamond Jubilee Concert, which was broadcast around the world. Lockhart has conducted nearly every major orchestra in North America, as well as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the NHK Symphony in Tokyo, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The evening’s program will delight listeners with a selection of works from English composers Britten, Elgar and George Butterworth, including Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85, featuring cello soloist Sophie Shao. The Vail Series invites the Denison and local communities, when space allows, to experience the virtuosity of a world-class concert orchestra and conductor in the beautiful environs of Swasey Chapel.
