The Women’s Resource Center, Sexual Harassment and Rape Education, the Women’s Studies Department and the Laura C. Harris Symposium at
Denison University celebrate V-Day, a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls, with several activities, including films, lectures, and benefit performances of the play “The Vagina Monologues,” written by Eve Ensler. All activities take place from Tuesday, April 12, through Thursday, April 21, and are open to the public.
Ten percent of the profits from V-Day events will benefit this year’s V-Day Spotlight Campaign, the women and girls of Haiti. The rest will be donated to the Center for New Beginnings in Newark, which provides a safe place for women and their children as they seek freedom from domestic violence.
• Tuesday, April 12: screening and discussion of “Free to Be You and Me,” at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). Prompted by the lack of nonsexist and multiracial children’s entertainment in the 1970s, Marlo Thomas created a world of her own in which all things were possible. “Free to Be You and Me” lives on as a cult classic, considered by many to be among the best children’s programming available.
• Wednesday, April 13: a benefit screening and discussion of “V-Day: Until the Violence Stops,” at 8 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Burton D. Morgan Center (150 Ridge Road). This film chronicles how Eve Ensler’s Broadway solo show “The Vagina Monologues” grew into V-Day, an international grassroots movement dedicated to stopping violence against women and girls.
• Friday, April 15: a screening and discussion of “Searching for Angela Shelton,” at 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Slayter Hall (200 Ridge Road). In this award-winning documentary, filmmaker Angela Shelton drives around the United States surveying other women named Angela Shelton. She discovers that 24 out of the 40 of these women are survivors of rape, childhood sexual abuse and/or domestic violence.
• Monday, April 18: lecture by Angela Shelton, “Be Your Own Hero,” at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). Filmmaker and director Angela Shelton will tell the story of how she went from a poor childhood to a successful career and all the bumps she experienced along the way.
• Wednesday, April 20: benefit performance of “The Vagina Monologues,” at 7:30 p.m. in the third floor of Slayter Hall (200 Ridge Road). “The Vagina Monologues” explores female sexuality in real stories of intimacy, vulnerability and sexual self-discovery.
