Date of Event: February 8, 2013

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Each year, V-Day groups in countries across the world schedule performances and events in February, March or April to support the global campaign to end violence against women. This year, Denison University students will perform excerpts from the playwright Eve Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues” and “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer” at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8 and 9, in the Knapp Performance Space (300 Ridge Road). These events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Marci McCaulay at 740-587-6696 or visit www.denison.edu

In addition, the Center for Women and Gender Action will sponsor two “One Billion Rising” events on Thursday, Feb. 14, in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of V-Day. The first, a kick-off event featuring musical performances, takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the flagpole in front of Slayter Hall (200 Ridge Road). Later that day, “One Billion Rising:  A Celebration to End,” an evening of dancing, music, food, craft activities and a poetry slam, will take place from 8 to 11 p.m. on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Slayter Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.

According to its website, “One Billion Rising” began as a call to action, a response to the fact that one in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten during her lifetime, which means that more than one billion women and girls will be attacked.

The V-Day performances are sponsored by the Center for Women and Gender Action, Sexual Harassment and Rape Education (SHARE) and the Laura C. Harris symposium at Denison University.
