Artist Sergio Vega Visits Denison Art Department
Date of Event: October 27, 2005
Posted: October 24, 2005
The Denison University art department and the Vail Visiting Artist fund are sponsoring a campus visit by artist Sergio Vega on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 27-28). He will present a public lecture at 7:45 p.m., Thursday in the Cleveland Hall Annex room 104. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Much of Vega's work addresses both contemporary and historical systems of representation. He has taken the ever-evolving notion of earthly paradise as a recurring point of departure in his artwork, specifically basing his recent research on the theory by Antonio de Leon Pinelo (1650) that locates the Garden of Eden in South America. Adopting a cross-disciplinary approach, Vega's investigation incorporates lush imagery and distinct literary references to create a physical manifestation of cultural myths in colonialist ideologies.
Vega earned a master's degree in sculpture from Yale University (1996) and participated in an independent study program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1992. He has had solo exhibitions in Chicago, New York City and Caracas, Venezuela, and received grants from the Ford Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, Flash Art, Artforum, Camera Austria, Tema Celeste, Atlantica, Art News, Art Nexus, The New York Times and Time Magazine.
