Denison University is participating in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Yellow Ribbon Program in support of GI Bill education opportunities for veterans. The result of this partnership is free tuition for veterans who meet the VA’s eligibility requirements, as well as the college’s requirements for admission.

“Half a century ago, the GI Bill transformed the lives of an entire generation by making a college education affordable,” says Denison President Dale Knobel. “Today, Denison is excited to partner with the Department of Veterans Affairs in providing a stepping stone to a college degree for men and women who have served our country.”

The Yellow Ribbon Program builds on the Post-9/11 GI Bill—which pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition for eligible veterans—by working in partnership with participating institutions to cover tuition costs higher than that benchmark. At Denison, for example, the VA would cover approximately two-thirds of the college’s $35,650 tuition, and Denison would provide a grant to pay the other third.

Knobel points out that Denison is one of the first national liberal arts colleges to sign on to the Yellow Ribbon Program and that Denison’s participation is an extension of the college’s robust financial aid and scholarship program. “This is representative of our long-standing belief that an investment in people through education is the most important investment of all.”

This year, Denison is providing $36.9 million of its own resources to students in the form of grants and scholarships. Next year, in light of the economic downturn and Denison’s continued to commitment to making college affordable for its accepted students, that figure is expected to increase by another $2 million.
