Posted: October 11, 2004
The Denison University Chamber Singers and Chamber Orchestra presentViva Vivaldi!, a concert featuring Baroque music, at 8 p.m., Saturday (Oct. 16) in Swasey Chapel. Admission is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature both individual and joint performances by the two groups. The Chamber Orchestra, directed by faculty members Andrew Carlson and Nicolas del Grazia, is a group of 18 top string players from the larger Denison Orchestra. They will perform "Concerto Grosso in D major, Op. 6 No. 4" by Arcangelo Corelli and "Concerto for Violin in D minor, Op. 8 No. 7" by Antonio Vivaldi. Both Corelli and Vivaldi were Italian composers of the Baroque period. Corelli is known for his works for strings and Vivaldi composed some 400 concertos. By virtue of his vocation and the color of his hair, Vivaldi was known as "the red priest."
In addition to Carlson, Emily Hickman '06 and Alexandra Wilson '08 will be featured as violin soloists. The Chamber Singers, directed by Stephen Caracciolo, will perform "Gloria from Pope Marcellus Mass" by G.P. Palestrina. Featured soloists are soprano Kristin Cox '07, soprano Kristen Strong '06, and mezzo-soprano Cora Walsh '06.
The two groups will collaborate to perform "The Magnificat in G minor" by Antonio Vivaldi. "This is an exciting opportunity for both groups to be featured on one program," said Carlson. "Combining the ensembles for the Magnificat should be an inspirational ending for this concert."
