Denison Implements New Cooperative Student Program with Case Western Reserve

Posted: February 18, 2005

Denison University and the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University will begin a "fifth-year" Masters of Science in Management (MSM) Degree Program for Denison students. It is a nine-month master's program in business for non-business majors. The program establishes funding for a $5,000 dollar scholarship for each Denison student admitted. Tuition in the Weatherhead School of Management is $30,200.

The program capitalizes on the strong communication and analytic skills built during the undergraduate liberal arts program. It also identifies and develops individual leadership abilities through the world-famous LEAD (Leadership Assessment and Development) course and matches students with an executive mentor in a range of sectors. The MSM Program is designed specifically for graduating or recently graduated bachelor degree students not having significant work experience and business/management coursework and who are interested in pursuing career and professional paths in which management education is valuable. It particularly focuses on liberal arts graduates and on adding fundamental management/business expertise that builds on the strengths of their liberal arts backgrounds.

The program broadly consists of an additional academic year of study designed to provide graduates with fundamental training and education in management/business. Students successfully completing the program will be awarded the degree Master of Science in Management from the Weatherhead School of Management. MSM students can work with the Denison University Office of Career Development, as well as Weatherhead School of Management's career center to be considered for positions that require skills including marketing, financial analysis and other analytical skills.

Students who have completed the MSM may return after one or more years of full-time work experience to complete an accelerated master of business administration degree in two additional full-time semesters. The total academic period for the combined MSM and accelerated MBA is four semesters-the same as for the traditional four-semester MBA degree.

As graduates of one of the premier liberal arts schools in the region, MSM candidates from Denison University will be admitted based on admission essays, bachelor's degree and grade point average and will not be required to complete additional admission exams.

Candidates for the MSM degree should receive their bachelor's degrees in the spring before entry into the program. Candidates are eligible to apply for additional scholarships and fellowships, as well as a variety of loan programs. Students with outstanding loans from a previous degree program may defer repayment until six months after completing the MSM degree.

This is the first year for the program and enrollment is limited to 20 students. In the future the maximum would be 35 students.
