Denison Speaker will Discuss Justice Issues in Society

The Denison University Goodspeed Lecture Fund and the Black Studies Program are sponsoring a lecture by Traci West, author of "Disruptive Christian Ethics: When Racism and Women's Lives Matter" (Westminster John Knox Press, 2006). Her appearance is set for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 24) in the Burton Morgan Lecture Hall and is free and open to the public.
West, associate professor of ethics and African American studies at Drew University Theological School, will speak on "Who Should Decide Marriage Is Good for You? Religion, Race, and Welfare Reform Policy." A member of United Methodists of Color for a Fully Inclusive Church, West has served in campus and parish ministry in the Hartford, Conn., area and has participated in an interfaith clergy delegation to Baghdad, Iraq.
West earned her bachelor's degree at Yale University, her master of divinity degree at Pacific School of Religion, and her doctorate at Union Theological Seminary. An earlier book, "Wounds of the Spirit: Black Women, Violence and Resistance Ethics," was published in 1999 by New York University Press and she has had articles on violence against women, racism, clergy ethics, sexuality and other justice issues in society published in recent years. West is an ordained elder in the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
