Advanced Placement Credits

Policy

Denison University participates in the Advanced Placement Program (AP) sponsored by the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB). Incoming First-Year students and Transfer students who score a 4 or a 5 on an AP Examination may receive academic credit for their scores. Should results be presented in academic disciplines or areas that are not part of the Denison curriculum, credit will be subject to departmental review and credit hours may or may not be assigned. Credit is usually awarded in the term in which the scores are received or fall semester of the student's first year at Denison University. It is possible for students to attain sophomore standing at the end of their first semester. The scores are not assigned a letter grade and will not count towards a student's Grade Point Average (GPA).

Two other kinds of advanced placement testing can be considered for credit. A student presenting "A" marks on the British System "A" Level Examination or a score of 6 or 7 on an International Baccalaureate (IB) Subject Exam may ask the appropriate Denison department for advanced placement credits. Sometimes positive results from advanced placement examinations can be applied toward general education or major/minor credits but departments reserve the right of review and the final determination of how such credits count.

The College Entrance Examination Board advanced placement tests are given during the month of May. Information concerning the schedule by subjects, places where tests will be given, application fee, and nature of the tests may be obtained by writing to:

CEEB Advanced Placement Tests
Box 592
Princeton, New Jersey 08540

or visiting the College Board website.

Incoming First-Year students and Transfer students should claim such earned Advanced Placement credit within one semester of enrolling at Denison. Beyond this one-semester time limit, re-testing or other similar certification procedures may be required. You can find information on requesting the official AP grade report on the College Board website. Denison's CEEB code is 1164.

Student standing is based upon credit hours earned at the end of each semester at Denison University. Standing is as follows:

First Year: 0 - 25.9
Sophomore: 26.0 - 59.9
Junior: 60.0 - 89.9
Senior: 90.0 +

Note: If a student wishes to take a course in which he has received AP credit, the AP credit must be deleted from the student's record. Credit for a course can only be applied for graduation once.
