General Education Requirements

The General Education requirements ensure that students develop core liberal arts competencies and encounter a broad range of liberal arts inquiries embraced by the faculty of Denison University.  In addition, the requirements expose students to a diversity of perspectives that enable them to interact more effectively in an increasingly interdependent world.  Please refer to the General Education Program for more details.


Summary of the General Education Requirements:

  • Two courses from the Fine Arts (different disciplines).  This requirement can be fulfilled by courses taken in Studio Art, Art History, Cinema, Dance, Music and Theatre.
  • Two courses from the Social Sciences (different disciplines).  This requirement can be fulfilled by courses taken in Communication, Economics, Education, Physical Education, Political Science and Sociology/Anthropology.
  • Two courses from the Humanities (different disciplines).  This requirement can be fulfilled by courses taken in Classics, English, History, Language (beyond 211 level), Philosophy and Religion.
  • Two courses from the Sciences (one fulfilling a lab requirement; different disciplines).  This requirement can be fulfilled by courses taken in Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy and Psychology.
  • One Interdivisional, which can be fulfilled by a course taken in Black Studies, East Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, International Studies, Latin and Caribbean Studies, Queer Studies or Women’s Studies.
  • One Writing Requirement, FYS 101, which can be fulfilled by courses that have been identified with the ‘S’ designation.  This requirement can be also satisfied by the Literature and Composition AP exam or the Language and Composition AP exam if a score of 4 or 5 has been achieved.
  • One Power and Justice, which can be fulfilled by courses that have been identified with the ‘P’ designation.
  • One Quantitative Reasoning, which can be fulfilled by courses that have been identified with the ‘Q’ designation.
  • One Oral Communication, which can be fulfilled by courses that have been identified with the ‘R’ designation.
  • Foreign Language Requirement.  Students must either complete 111-112 in a language in which no high school course work was undertaken or 211 in a language in which the student had high school experience.
  • One FYS 102, First Year Topical Seminar.  FYS 102 courses are designed to enhance student research and writing skills in the context of topics in the Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Denison’s interdisciplinary programs.
