Reinstatement and Re-Enrollment

Given the varying situations regarding a student having to be reinstated at Denison University, the following links will provide more information on specific circumstances.

 Situation-Specific Information

    + Reinstatement Following Academic Action

    Reinstatement Following Academic Action

IMPORTANT: Students planning to seek reinstatement  MUST contact the Registrar prior to submitting a petition.

    Process Overview

When students have experienced academic difficulty, they may be academically suspended and will be expected to be away from the University for a period of time.  Normally, after one semester absence (or in the case of severe deficiency, a two semester absence), a student can be considered for reinstatement.  Whenever a student asks to be reconsidered for reinstatement the following items must be submitted to the Academic Standing Board:

    1. Reinstatement Petition: The form can be obtained online or from the Registrar's Office. In the petition the student needs to thoroughly discuss the cause of his/her weak academic performance and how those problems have been successfully addressed.

    2. Evidence that the student has corrected the problems that led to deficient academic performance: In nearly all cases, quality course work (full time course load) completed at a previously approved institution will be expected. Evidence might also include positive and productive work experiences; academic, emotional, psychological, and/or health counseling; resolution of family and relationship problems.

    3. At least two letters of recommendation: Preferably one should be from the academic advisor or a faculty person at Denison who can address strengths and weaknesses that he or she might have observed in the student's previous academic efforts. The second might be from a professor with whom you have studied at the institution you attended after departing Denison.

The three sets of items to be reviewed by the Academic Standing Board must be filed with the Registrar by August 1st for fall reinstatement and by December 1st for spring reinstatement. In the case where final grades or transcripts from other institutions are not be available in time to meet the petition deadline, students should still submit their petition materials by the deadline and follow-up with official transcripts as soon as available.

Any petition received after the deadline will unfortunately not be considered for review.

All items should be mailed to:
