Resident Assistant: Requirements and Expectations

Resident Assistants are role models and leaders within the Denison community.  In order to be eligible for this opportunity, it is expected that those selected will be able to successfully balance the social and academic standards that promote the position.  To that end, the following are the minimum expectations that must be met in order for a candidate to receive interview consideration:

  • Candidates must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the conclusion of the Fall semester prior to application, and
  • Candidates shall not have any active conduct status of Warning Probation or higher at the time of placement (verification is coordinated with the Office of Community Rights and Standards)

If selected, student candidates are advised that these minimum expectations must be maintained (2.5 cumulative GPA and no conduct status of WP or higher) through the duration of the employment contract.  In addition to these minimum expectations, selected students who choose to accept a position on the Residential Life team must also agree to abide by additional expectations related to the position.  Student staff members must:

  • maintain full-time student status (full course load) at Denison through the duration of the contract;
  • understand that employment outside or in addition to the RA position shall only occur at the discretion of the area supervisor.  Outside work may not exceed more than 3 hours per week (13 hours for international students);
  • recognize the RA position as the first non-academic priority.  Participation in other outside commitments (including but not limited to club memberships, sports, sororities, fraternities, etc.) may be limited, as appropriate, by the area supervisor;
  • *be available to fulfill the position for the entire academic year;
  • return to Denison in early August to participate in Fall Training activities;
  • stay one day following the last day of final exams to close the residence halls for the Winter Break;
  • return at least two days prior to opening of the residence halls following Winter Break (in January) to open the residence halls and participate in mid-year training activities;
  • stay late (beyond the closing of the residence halls) on the first days of Fall (Thanksgiving) Break and Spring Break to assist with building closing;
  • stay one day beyond graduation to assist with year-end residence hall closure.  Staff are expected to remain until ALL residence halls are closed, and at the discretion of the area supervisor; and
  • assist with both the Staff Selection process and the Lottery process in the Spring Semester.
*The department does not typically offer positions to those who cannot commit for the entire academic year.  This information is verified with Off-Campus Programs, the Registrar’s Office and the candidate before hire.
