The John W. Alford Center for Service Learning promotes and supports local community service by engaging the Denison community in three areas:

  • Denison Community Association - our student led and operated umbrella organization for  24 student service committees
  • America Reads - our program for Federal Work Study students to provide tutoring services to area elementary schools
  • Curricular service learning - Denison courses which include structured service work as part of the text of the course
  • Denison Service Orientation (DSO)-the Center partners with First Year Programs to provide a service orientation opportunity for freshman in Washington, DC each year


Current and Upcoming Events:

Welcome, new and returning Denison students! If you would like to be involved in volunteer activities or the America Reads program, please stop by our office in the basement of Higley Hall and our really friendly staff and student workers will help find a service committee that is the right fit for you.

  • Saturday, August 30, 7:00-9:00 pm - "We're Talking Politics" - join us at the Center for Service Learning in the basement of Higley Hall for voter information and registration. Listen to  live music and have refreshments while learning more about the upcoming election.

  • Sunday, August 31, 1:00-3:00pm - First Year Service Project - gather at 1:00 in front of the library for the community food drive.

  • Monday, September 8 - America Reads applications are due by 4:30 at the Service Learning Center in Higley Hall.

  • Sunday, September 14, 1:30-5:00 - America Reads Training - Shepardson College Room in Slayter Hall. New tutors attend the mandatory training session at 1:30. Returning tutors join the training at 3:00 on the 3rd floor of Slayter Hall, where a pizza lunch will be served.
