‘Start as you mean to go on’

They’re off and running. They learned ancient history from a classics professor, botany from Denison’s president (a history professor), and how the words “I Love You” can build community from the student body president. It was the Induction Ceremony, 60 minutes of memory-making for 623 incoming first-year students, Denison’s “most diverse class” in its history.

The Induction of Denison’s Class of 2014 was held on the Reese~Shackelford Common on Thursday, Aug. 26, and capped off a busy move-in day for the students. After gathering at Swasey Chapel, they processed across campus to the Common where they were greeted with applause from faculty in full academic regalia and an audience of proud relatives and friends.

President Knobel rang the Denison Bell, forged in 1855, to begin the ceremony. Senior Harry Brisson, president of the DCGA, spoke about the community’s emphasis on compassion, respect for others, and making everyone feel at home.

Vice President of Institutional Advancement Julie Houpt, Class of ’75, welcomed the group to the Denison family, with its warmth, strong bonds, and high academic and ethical standards. She also presented the class banner to Chinh Ngo and Abby Hamilton, two members of the class who came the farthest (8885 miles) and nearest (600 yards) to be part of the Class of 2014.

Chair of the Faculty Garrett Jacobsen quoted from Socrates and T.S. Eliot, suggesting that the students have self-awareness and “start as you mean to go on.”

And President Knobel advised the new students to “Assume responsibility for growing yourself, and put service beyond self.”

The ceremony concluded with singing the alma mater, To Denison, led by Molly Coyne, Class of 2012.
