Measure by measure

Beethoven was in the air this week as students learned directly from members of the Pacifica Quartet and pianist Menahem Pressler.

After Sunday’s Vail Series performance in Swasey Chapel, Pacifica violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson and cellist Brandon Vamos tutored a student quartet in an hour-long master class on Monday. They explored Beethoven’s Quartet in F Major, Op. 18, No. 1, measure by measure, so the students could learn some tips and tricks, and absorb a deeper understanding of one of Beethoven’s most celebrated pieces.

Students also received one-on-one attention from the legendary Menahem Pressler, one of the most respected pianists in the world. He spoke in depth about the mood and histories of the specific pieces the students have been practicing.

Among the students who participated in Pressler’s class were sisters Irene Tsai ’11 and Jolyn Tsai ’13. And Jolyn actually got a double dose of master classes, because she is also violist in the student quartet.
