Earth Week in motion

In keeping with the Denison tradition of doing things up big, Earth Day has morphed into Earth Week.

Students have been assembling terrariums, creating far-out fashion for the “Trashion Show,” digging Bluegrass music while dipping into boxes of duds at a clothing exchange, checking out the documentary “Gasland,” and ambling along on an “Earth Walk.”

Professors dug in as well. Olivia Aguilar’s environmental studies classes spent a carbon-free week, and Stafford Berry’s dance class celebrated with an Earth Day Bantaba dance in honor of Mother Earth herself. (Bantaba is the Mandinka word for “Dancing Ground.”)

And there has been a new T-shirt seen around campus this week, created by Denison’s Green Team. It has a beautiful sunflower on a field of green (of course), with the phrase “I live my life by the seed of my plants” on the back.

Denison also posted impressive results for this year’s RecycleMania contest – a friendly competition between college campuses that promotes – you guessed it – recycling. This year Denison finished 28th out of 363 national participants – and recycled nearly five pounds more person than last year.

Actually, Green Team also has another shirt available. The green shirt is an Earth Day shirt, while we are also selling Blue Reduce Reuse Recycle shirts with the same phrase on the back (both sell for ten dollars). Check with Green Team members if you haven’t gotten one yet!
