They came to dance, dance, dance [FOLLOW-UP]

As promised, we have video from Friday’s flash mob on the Academic Quad.

Near as we could count, the dance to Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” involved some 200 people, with several hundred more gathering around to watch.

The participants, mostly students, included groups like University Programming Council, the women’s swimming team, the Homestead, the dance team club, and members of Greek life. But there were plenty of faculty and staff shakin’ it up, too, including members of the library staff and several academic administrative assistants.

Sponsored by the Spectrum Series’ campus theme for this academic year, “Technology and Community,” and finding its footing in Professor of Dance Gill Wright Miller’s Movement Analysis class, the mob took on a life of its own over the last few weeks.

The idea was to build this community of dancers without using social media technology, like Facebook. So word spread the old fashioned way, face-to-face, about the secret times and places for dance practices.

But right up until the last hours before the big event, the “mob” didn’t gather in one place. Instead, they learned the steps in small groups–sometimes just two or three students at a time. Then they all came together for a few run-throughs before the real thing.

And here’s an interesting bit of info–it turns out that the flash mob’s moves were choreographed by Connie Bergstein Dow ’73, Denison’s first dance major.

The result was pure fun–a throw-your-arms-up-and-sing-ay-oh good time. Thanks, everyone. We loved it.

What exactly are they accomplishing? Dancing like crap together?

Technology would be the sound system they used to play music…

Wish I could have been there to see it in person, but this video was great.

Is this available on YouTube? It should be. It would spread like wildfire and be good promo for the school.
