‘Sapphire’ Steve Carell ’84 gives a shout-out to campus radio station

Steve Carell ’84 stars as Cal in the new movie “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

Maybe your summer job has been keeping you out of circulation, or maybe a vacation at the lake has provided some welcome respite, but unless you’ve been under a rock for the last couple of weeks, you know that Steve Carell ’84 has been everywhere promoting his new film, Crazy, Stupid, Love, that opens nationwide tomorrow (July 29). The movie, distributed by Warner Bros. Entertainment, is the first release from Carell’s Carousel Productions, and he is billed as one of the producers, along with Carousel partner and Denison alumnus Charlie Hartsock ’83, who is an executive producer on the project.

We have a clip of the self-monikered “Sapphire Steve Carell” on NPR’s Talk of the Nation, recounting his time in Granville as a deejay on Denison’s own WDUB. You’ll find the reference around the 3:30 mark of Neal Conan’s amiable interview in the audio bar below. More on the NPR piece, including interview highlights and a transcript, can be found on the Talk of the Nation website.

And should you want to peruse a current Carell chronicle from his hometown’s point of view, we recommend Ty Burr’s in-depth interview in The Boston Globe.

“Crazy, Stupid, Love” opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
