Let the games begin

There’s a new but familiar face around the athletic department these days, and we couldn’t be happier. Denison has welcomed one of its own back to the fold as Nan Carney-DeBord ’80 has accepted an appointment as the Big Red’s new director of athletics, physical education and recreation. She has been working with coaches and administrators throughout the summer, and now the 2011 fall sports season is set to open on Thursday, Sept. 1, when the DU volleyball squad plays host to Otterbein at 7 p.m. in Livingston Gym.

As she begins her new assignment at Denison, Nan’s as excited as we are, and she has some new and creative ideas about the role of athletics on campus, and beyond. She’s a strong advocate of alumni involvement and plans to increase visibility, awareness and participation among Denison’s graduates. She also is a proponent of departmental synergy, especially among the college’s 23 varsity sports and coaches. Nan inherits a highly successful athletics program that is the current North Coast Athletic Conference All-Sports Champion. Denison has won that honor a record 12 times, including 11 championships in the last 14 years.

In case you missed our story in TheDEN announcing Nan’s appointment, we’ll remind you that she came to us from nearby Ohio Wesleyan University, where she had an impressive 25-year career as women’s basketball coach and as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education. Nan’s long list of accomplishments includes both a stellar athletic career as an undergrad at Denison and a remarkable coaching career at OWU that earned her seven conference Coach of the Year honors and the distinction of being selected as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division III National Coach of the Year.

I played with Nan for 2 years and have the greatest respect for her leadership and enthusiasm. Good choice, and go Big Red! (how’s that achilles Nan?)

I had the pleasure of playing sports with Nan for 3 years at Denison (I was a year ahead of her). Welcome back! Remember the draconian days of Penny Horn as the women’s AD, when she said women liked to do their own laundry, so “the cage” would not clean our game uniforms???
