I also tend to rely on my cell phone as a safety item, but the penultimate paragraph made me grin. It put me in mind of Ernest Shackleton's 1914-1917 Antarctic expedition. They endured incredible hardship and deprivation and they were completely out of touch with the rest of the world for the duration of the voyage. There was simply no communication and they were left entirely to their own resources. Each and every crew member returned alive. It's an astonishing tale and one worth rereading periodically.
