Remembering 9/11

DEN SHOTS:

This weekend, Denisonians honored the memories of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, with activities across the campus and beyond. Volunteer students cleaned up a section of the Licking River and tended the Community Gardens in Newark. Others staffed a family night for the community, showing the movie Wall-E, and worked with Licking Memorial Hospital to provide free health screenings. And Sunday evening, at an interfaith service of healing and peace, Swasey Chapel echoed with the music of a 60-voice community choir singing Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem,” featuring soloists Kevin Wines, tenor, Belinda Andrews-Smith, soprano, and Andy Carlson, violin, all members of the faculty of Denison’s Department of Music.

The Interfaith Concert for Healing and Peace included powerful prayers from six of the world’s religious traditions as a demonstration of a constructive response to counter the tragedy of terrorism. It was an example of the positive religious impulses that are largely ignored in the world and as a consequence, fundamentalist voices override. The 60 voice choir included voices from many churches who came together as a show of solidarity to honor those those lives lost and to express hope for a better world.
