I've been working in the education policy sector since graduating from Denison in 2004. I'm delighted to see that a group of students went on this type of service learning trip, and Jerome acknowledges many of the inequities in our current education system. I specialize in turnaround schools, comprehensive district reforms, and building state systems of support for low-performing schools. As a result, every day, I see and deal with these inequities, the injustices, and the fact that too many adults are only looking out for themselves. I hope that some of the students who went on this trip pursue work in the education reform sector - I'd be happy to connect graduates to some of my colleagues as well.
While most of the readers will deny this, your statement, "...unless the standards of quality education for all children are raised across the board," is what President Bush's "No child left behind" policy was intended to accomplish. Certainly not perfect, and the policy relied too heavily on high stakes testing, but it is difficult to deny that it was a step in the right direction.

I was one of the participants on this break away trip. I would like to say that I had amazing time, and learn so much. The students I met were determined and smart. Education is a huge issue in the U.S. because there are so many students who are losing out on a good education because a various amount of reasons. Since this trip I am thinking about being a teacher more and more.
