Where Exploration Begins

During finals week, students typically spread out to every spare corner of campus, weighted down with books and laptops and the stress that defines this time of the semester. For an hour or so last week, however, the student workers and full-time staff of the Career Exploration and Development Center shared stories and laughter over an end-of-year celebration lunch, featuring Olive Garden take-out and chocolate-covered strawberries prepared by the seniors among the group.

Throughout the year, the CEDC workers have provided vital support to the center’s mission of helping fellow students consider possibilities for life after Denison and understand how their liberal arts education has prepared them. So it led us to ask, how are the CEDC seniors approaching their own lives after Denison—or at least the next step? Not surprisingly, the responses are rather impressive.

CEDC student staff of the Class of ’12 (l-r) Christy Fayette, Carly Tschantz, Huiwen Ouyang, and Marissa Ortiz.

Christy Fayette, a French/international studies double major from Chicago, will travel east to Morristown, N.J., where she has accepted an underwriting position at ProSight Specialty Insurance. As the name implies, it’s something of a niche business (with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and London) but after interning for four summers in two different brokerages, and being raised by two parents in insurance, Fayette is excited for the opportunity.

With help from a Fulbright grant, Marissa Ortiz will head even farther east to the Czech Republic and teach English to 12-15 year-olds in the Eastern Bohemian capital of Hradec Krlove. And even though creative writing/vocal performance double major pronounces the town’s name with remarkable dialect, she admits that she doesn’t know any Czech. At least not yet. That’s her main project for the summer.

Huiwen Ouyang is an economics major with a stellar academic record. After her parents make their first-ever visit from China to celebrate her graduation, Ouyang will adventure to New York City and begin her job hunt there.

Carly Tschantz has an internship lined up with Marketing Werks in Chicago this summer. But she’s also waiting to see if she can go coach lacrosse and teach in a boarding school in England for the next year. She interviews for that at the end of this month, so fingers crossed!
