Something for everyone

The Academic Quad was a maze of tables Thursday afternoon for the annual Involvement Fair, a chance for students to sign up to participate in service groups, club sports, multicultural organizations, religious and spiritual groups, and Greek life, among others.

Music blared on the Quad, while students munched on funnel cakes and corn dogs and toured the possibilities. Really, there was something for everyone, what with the 172 organizations and 12 departments represented at the Fair. The Vegetarian Society plans to hold potlucks this year and educate others about the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. There is a club for knitters, one for gamers, one for dramatists, one for students who want to learn about Buddhist meditation. The Denison Feminists and the Denison Republicans were represented, as was the Quidditch Club (for all you Harry Potter fans), the Geological Society, and the Association for Women in Mathematics.

It’s a well-known saying around here that if you can’t find a club to suit your interests, you can create it. That’s what Marquita Williams ’14 did when she co-founded Ebony Butterflies, a brand-new outreach organization that will mentor girls in Columbus. Williams herself participated in outreach programs in Chicago growing up, and if it weren’t for them, she says, she might not be sitting at this table on Denison’s campus. Ebony Butterflies is her way of giving back, she says, because others did the same for her.
