The courage to create a just world

In his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (April 16, 1963), the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Denison’s 2013 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, themed “The Courage to Create a Just World,” encompasses a host of related events. Included are an evening interfaith service on Sunday, Jan. 20, and a Day of Learning on Monday, Jan. 21, featuring a service fair in Doane Library (10 a.m.), a community luncheon and dialogue in both Curtis and Huffman dining halls (11:15 a.m.), and a community convocation in Swasey Chapel (1 p.m.). The convocation will spotlight alumni panelists who will help members of the audience directly connect the life and legacy of Dr. King to their own civic engagement.

In addition, this is the second year that Denison’s MLK Jr. celebration includes “teach-ins,” which are short classes, discussions or workshops led by students, faculty and other members of the community. Fifteen different sessions spread across three 50-minute periods will take place following Monday’s convocation, from 2:30 to 5:20 p.m.
