They’ve arrived

There’s a Subaru with Vermont plates sitting in the driveway of Monomoy Place, as the moving vans roll up with the personal belongings of the Weinberg family from Brattleboro, Vt.

Today (July 1)Dr. Adam Weinberg took office as Denison’s 20th president, following the retirement of Dale Knobel.

Weinberg comes to Denison from World Learning, an international nonprofit that provides education, exchange and development programs in more than 60 countries. He graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College and did work at Cambridge University before earning his master’s degree and doctorate in sociology from Northwestern University. He was vice president and dean of the college at Colgate University, where he served on the faculty for more than a decade.

He gained national prominence for his work on increasing civic education, including publishing widely on the importance of civic education, and starting a number of organizations like The COVE (Center for Outreach, Volunteerism, and Education) and The Partnership for Community Development. In 2006, Weinberg joined World Learning as the provost of the School for International Training, and also served as the organization’s executive vice president.

The Weinberg family includes Adam’s wife, Anne Weinberg; their younger daughter, Abigail; their son, Nathan, who will be a junior at Granville High School this fall; and their older daughter, Margaret, who is an undergraduate at New York University.

Oh, and there’s also Ellie, the Weinberg’s six-month-old yellow lab, who likely will be spotted on the Monomoy grounds this week.

The campus is abuzz today about the new president and his family—there’s even a giant banner at the top of the front drag welcoming them to the Hill. We’re excited about Denison’s future, so here’s a Big Red welcome to the Weinbergs!
