What a weekend!

Denison’s varsity sports teams defeated every opponent that came before them in Granville during Big Red Weekend (Oct. 4-6). On Friday,  men’s soccer downed Hiram on Barclay-Thomsen Field by a 2–1 score, and on Saturday, women’s soccer beat the Terriers, 3–1. Also on Saturday, the DU field hockey squad defeated conference foe Ohio Wesleyan, 2–1, in Piper Stadium, and volleyball swept NCAC opponent Allegheny, 3–0, in Livingston Gym. And the Big Red football overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to triumph over rival DePauw, 42–21. Though these successes were the direct result of the talents and efforts of Denison’s varsity athletes, they surely received an extra measure of help from the throngs of fans in the stands, as nearly 1,000 guests — parents, siblings, alumni, friends, and even a family dog or two — made their way to campus for Big Red Weekend 2013.

But the weekend was made up of much more than sports events. The Denison Homestead dedicated its new cabin that “homies” built during the summer months; student singing group DU-Wop belted out Adele’s “Rumor Has It” during the traditional student a cappella concert in Swasey; and Tony Lisska, professor of philosophy and Granville history buff, led tours of the village and gave attendees the inside scoop on the history of Denison’s former presidents during a talk in the Presidents’ Room of the library. “This is not sanitized history,” Lisska told parents and alumni. “I don’t do sanitized history.”

Students gave parents and alumni tours of their Denison digs and showed off their scholarly work in poster presentations; the Black Alumni Association held their annual Black Alumni Reunion on campus; and seven former athletes and coaches were inducted into the Varsity D Association’s Hall of Fame.

The weekend was filled with good times — too many to mention here — but you can see all the fun for yourself in the gallery below and on Denison’s Flickr site.

You forgot the Tennis team/Alumni tennis matches. The first ever such event at Denison. Thanks to Peter Burling.
