The college reopened  on January 2 after a short break, and staff and faculty are already gearing up for the spring semester. (Classes won’t begin until January 20, so students are still pretty scarce around here.) The four inches of snow predicted for the Columbus area doesn’t bring on many thoughts of spring, but the semester should be a great one. Here’s a look at just a few of the events to come in the first half of 2014.

Jan 23: Campus will honor Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of service in conjunction with Denison’s John W. Alford Center for Service Learning.

Jan. 29: Denisonians will get together for the ninth annual “After Work with Denison … Everywhere!” event, during which alumni and friends from across the country and around the world gather at local pubs and restaurants to celebrate with other DU grads from their area.

Feb. 8: The Vail Series will present the first concert of 2014 with the Julian Lage Trio, composed of guitar prodigy Julian Lage, percussionist Tupac Mantilla, and bass player Jorge Roeder, for an evening of world-class jazz in Swasey Chapel.

March 28: Vail is back with Bobby McFerrin, who is set to perform selections form his new album spirityouall.

April 25: The Academic Awards Convocation will take place to honor academic achievements. It’s during this big event that the campus learns of the 2014 President’s Medalists.

May 17: Denison sends the Class of 2014 on their way during the college’s 173rd Annual Commencement Exercises.

And all throughout the semester, there will be plenty of other speakers and artists making their way to campus as part of Denison’s many lecture and performance series. To mark your shiny new 2014 calendars with these events, visit Denison’s Events Calendar.
