In case you didn’t know, members of the Denison men’s lacrosse team are feeling pretty good about themselves this season. And a hard-fought, come-from-behind victory over conference rival Ohio Wesleyan on April 16 in Granville only made the 2014 campaign that much sweeter.
With under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, the undefeated and fourth-ranked DU squad was trailing by a 9-7 score, but the Big Red managed to hold the Bishops scoreless for the final 18 minutes of the contest, while notching three unanswered tallies of their own. Two goals by first-year Luke Walsh on assists from senior Austin Campbell and sophomore Brian Miller tied the game with 12:21 remaining.
Then, the game-winner came when sophomore James Meager worked his way between two Bishop defenders, moving in close from his right to left, to set up a quick unassisted scoring shot that whizzed past OWU goalie Ryan McMahon with 5:34 left on the fourth-quarter clock. The Big Red were able to retain possession through most of the waning moments of the contest to secure the dramatic win, and when the dust finally settled, the Piper Stadium scoreboard read: Denison 10, Ohio Wesleyan 9.
With one more conference matchup remaining this season, the victory over OWU assures Denison of at least a share of the NCAC crown.
