Big Fun: Reunion 2014
On Saturday night (May 31), the band was fired up, but the dance floor was empty. Until, of course, a group from the Class of 1964, celebrating their 50th Reunion, started to boogey toward the back of Reese~Shackelford Common.
At first no one noticed the man in the suit jacket taking the lead, high-tailin’ it back and forth behind the crowd as his friends surrounded him—dance-off style—and cheered him on. Before long, another gent made his way to the pack, dancing along the way. Other folks from the Class of 1939 all the way through 2009, started to turn toward the back of the Common, smiling and snapping photos.
The Class of 1964 was showing them all how it’s done.
It was a stellar performance, really, and led the rest of the reunion crowd to get moving too, as they took to the dance floor following fun class receptions and dinner in the dining halls, and dessert and cocktails on the Common.
The dance party was the much-loved capstone to Reunion Weekend 2014, but it certainly wasn’t the only event bringing alumni back to Denison.
Throughout the weekend, Denisonians had the chance to attend Alumni College classes covering topics ranging from sustainability on campus to the films of Alfred Hitchcock. They attended the Alumni Convocation to announce their class gifts and to see 11 fellow classmates be awarded the Alumni Citation—the highest award bestowed upon alumni from the college. They listened on Saturday morning as President Adam Weinberg offered his State of the College address. They took part in campus tours to see their old haunts, as well as the new buildings that have cropped up on the Hill since their graduation days. And at least one attendee decided to use the weekend to propose to his girlfriend. (She said yes.)
But most important, alumni spent another glorious Reunion Weekend reuniting with friends, listening to great music, enjoying 80-degree temps and sunshine, and creating all those new memories that can only sprout up with impromptu dancing and a whole lot of laughter.
