As a senior at the Englewood campus of Urban Prep Academy in Chicago, Steven Clark traded in the solid red tie of his school uniform for a tie with red and gold stripes, an honor he earned with his acceptance to college. The well-known prep school boasts a 100-percent college acceptance rate for its graduating seniors, and lucky for us, Steven chose Denison.
He is Urban Prep’s 2014 valedictorian and class president, and he is set to arrive in Granville this fall with the rest of the Denison’s record-setting Class of 2018, where he plans to major in psychology. Even NPR took notice of Steven’s accomplishments and the work of Urban Prep with a story in its “Men in America” series on All Things Considered. In that story, quotes from Clark’s powerful graduation address are highlighted.
“I have to show the world that the real black males of Chicago are sitting right here in this room, because we are graduates, not gangsters,” said Clark, who graduated with highest honors. “We are dedicated, not delinquent. We are collegian, not convicts — and let the world know that.”
We at the college are proud to welcome Steve and the rest of the Class of 2018 to the Denison family. To learn more about Steve and Urban Prep, and to hear the audio, link to the full story at All Things Considered.
