Each year our community is invited to contribute to an anthology of creative projects reflecting our annual campus-wide theme. If you're a sports fan, you know sports writer and radio personality Dan Patrick. And if you're a Dan Patrick fan and a Denison fan, you may have been pretty excited to see a familiar Denison symbol during a recent Dan Patrick Show simulcast: a Denison swim cap. It first appeared in June and has been part of the studio décor for a few weeks now. How did it get there? Turns out, Nancy Duncan Porter, a development officer for the college, began trading emails with the Dan Patrick team back in March in hopes of getting a group of organizational studies students a tour of the studio and a chat with some professionals in the broadcasting and entertainment world. Unfortunately, the show wasn't equipped to host a tour at the time, but when a Duncan Porter sent them the cap, the Dan Patrick team offered up the hat trick as a very cool consolation prize.

Every year at about this time, there's a bit of a shift in the Denison atmosphere. Today is the last day of classes, and for the rest of this week and next, students take all that learning they did throughout the semester and apply it to final exams, papers, and projects. So instead of seeing them rush from class to class, you're more likely to see sleepy students hunkered down over laptops writing or studying, perfecting the last strokes on a final art project, or in the lab wrapping up their work. At the end of next week, it'll all be over, and the students will be off on other adventures. The seniors will start preparing for graduation (May 13) and life after Denison. The rest of the students will head home for the summer or embark on summer internships. Some will hang out on the Hill to continue their studies through summer research projects. Our advice to them? Don't forget to rest, because on August 27 at 8:30 a.m., it'll start all over again.

Research incubation, defense strategy, venture capitalism—if it has to do with cutting edge technology, Sergei Kanareykin '03 has probably had his hands in it. The Boston-based alum was on campus yesterday talking with math and computer science majors about the many possibilities students have after their time at Denison. Since graduation, Kanareykin has served as the chief technical officer of the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, the deputy managing director of Oxantium Ventures, and CEO of Make a Mind Company, a technology incubator.

Last month, the DU Art Collective got busy with campus and area community members at the Bryant Arts Center to make a big bunch of lovely handcrafted bowls. This afternoon in the Welsh Hills Room, all those vessels were sold (complete with some tasty soup) to raise money for the Licking County Food Pantry in recognition of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

This weekend, Denisonians honored the losses of Sept. 11, 2001, with activities across the campus and beyond. Students cleaned up a section of the Licking River and tended the Community Gardens in Newark. They staffed a family night for the community, showing the movie Wall-E and worked with the Licking Memorial Hospital to provide free health screenings. And Sunday evening, at an interfaith service of healing and peace, Swasey Chapel echoed with the haunting music of a 60-person choir performing Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem," with solos provided by Denison faculty members Kevin N. Wines, Belinda Andrews-Smith and Andy Carlson.

Spencer Wells, geneticist and Explorer-in-Residence for the National Geographic Society, reconnoitered our campus over the last couple of days. And while he saw a lot of the beautiful fall landscape, his real focus was on students. He brown-bagged a dinner with the Sustained Dialogue group, delivered a lecture to a packed Swasey Chapel, and dropped into a couple of classrooms. Here's some pretty proof that the new natatorium project is coming right along—water! Even in advance of having four walls and a roof, they recently conducted testing for the water-tightness of the pool. (It passed.) We'll have another big milestone later this month when the steel structure of the building starts to go up around it. And the project is right on schedule to open in time for the fall 2012 semester.

If you've ever left your room or office on campus, you've heard rising senior Molly Coyne sing—and usually bring down the house in the process. She's lent her talents to several campus productions as well as to special events like last year's Induction. This summer, Ohio's longest-running nonprofit professional summer stock theatre, the Weathervane Playhouse in Newark, boasted Coyne's talents in several productions, including her co-starring role as Roxie Hart in Chicago (pictured above).
