Since 1947, the Kussmaul Award—jointly presented by Denison University and the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce, has been given annually to a Denison University student (traditionally a senior) who has contributed the most to building friendly relations between Denison and the Granville community. This year the award was given to two Denison students, Andrea Weyneth and Mara Kilgore.

Andrea Weyneth works on a weekly basis with elementary age children at Granville and Newark schools through the America Reads tutor program. By focusing on developing the student’s reading skills, she builds their confidence and nourishes a love of reading and learning. The individual attention that she provides is invaluable to the student’s school experience. She also chaired the DCA Human society for several years. She is a young lady of great personal integrity and is able to view the world globally as well as reaching the needs of her local community. Andrea is a valued, highly contributing member of the Denison Community and the larger community of Licking County.

Mara Kilgore is a volunteer leader with YoungLIfe of Licking County working with Granville High School students. During all four of her years at Denison, Mara has shared her life with the students at Granville HS conducting weekly Bible studies, meeting students for coffee, and hanging out with them after-school, at school dances, and at football games. She has entered into the world of so many GHS students. Her nominator for the award wrote “I am continually impressed with her selfless and compassionate decision to use her four years of college, a time when most focus exclusively on bettering themselves, to better the lives of Granville High School students”. Mara is a great Denisonian and a great friend to the students at Granville High School and the Licking County community at large.
